Design a platform for the management and the analysis of fuel stations network.
Fortech is the leading company in the Products & Services market for oil stations in Italy. Upon joining the team, I was assigned the task of implementing a new platform for the centralized management of aggregated data for its customers. The current software appears to be almost 10 years old. The objective is to modernize the software interface and radically redesign the user experience. With this goal in mind, the aim is to establish a style that will guide all future developments, following the patterns already chosen.
Duration: 20 January - Ongoing
The aim of the project is to create a new portal that enables the customer to query a large amount of data quickly. The portal will replace Datamanager (the old platform) and later also the analysis reports on Sitemanager, so that the customer will only use one portal for querying historical and real time data. On the corporate side, the benefit will be that only one portal will be maintained and developed by a defined team, using new technologies that will make data management easier.
Fortech was set up in 2006 from the synergic collaboration of professionals who had long been working in the field of fuel distribution.
Various giants in the field of petrol distribution have decided to rely on us for the Fortech know-how and professionalism, building solid and long lasting partnerships.
Fortech today is market leader in Italy providing customized solutions to improve business performance of single service stations, fuel retail networks and large petrol companies.
In the last few years, Fortech has also started a process of internationalization, which, thanks to various partnerships, has led it to establish bases in various foreign countries.
- Integrated authentication with Fortech authentication
- Multi-customer access management (several customers can access at the same time)
- Possibility of exporting all reports in excel format
- Possibility to create an excel export schedule and send by email
- Possibility to customise the structure of the reports while keeping the user's choice saved (e.g. in the report he wants the column Teaching)
- Possibility of grouping the data as desired (e.g. by network, sign, province, etc.)
- Generic sales analysis with the possibility of filtering the scope (oil, non-oil, wash, parking, electric, etc.)
- Comparison report allowing 2 or more tables to be selected using filters. The data will also be shown in a graph that can be inserted in an initial dashboard. The creation of the comparison could be done via a wizard
- Report Totalisers
- Report Levels
- Price Report showing all applied prices per day / product / service type / pv
- Report showing all prices applied real time and possibility to perform price changes
- Load Report with the new information we have available (edas, load price etc.)
- Withdrawal report
- Returns and Refunds Report
In this first section of the project, my contribution was only to read and learn the work done by the UX Designer that worked here before me. This was because the will of the company was born before I arrived and some of the UX work had already been done.
Another consideration has to be made: the existing platform was used by very few customers, and therefore the interviews that were conducted related to that tool was very far from the future one.
After looking at the result of the interviews done and realising what the main use of the old Datamanager web app was, I set the key points of the Persona:
- Analysis of fuel sales
- Analysis of payment type
- Analysis of fuel tanks
- Comparison of past periods with the current one
The dashboard that I have designed is thoughtfully crafted to cater to users who may not be technologically proficient in navigating digital platforms. With a user-friendly interface and intuitive design, the dashboard ensures ease of use and accessibility for individuals with varying levels of technological expertise. Its simplicity and clarity of presentation enable users to quickly grasp the information and insights presented without feeling overwhelmed or confused. The dashboard employs visual aids, such as charts, graphs, and clear labeling, to effectively communicate data and metrics, making it easier for non-technical users to interpret and comprehend the information.
Additionally, the dashboard incorporates helpful tooltips, contextual guidance, and a streamlined navigation system to assist users in seamlessly moving between different sections and functionalities. By prioritizing user-friendliness and simplicity, your dashboard empowers users with limited technological proficiency to harness the power of data analysis and make informed decisions, without the need for extensive technical knowledge or training.
My approach to this platform has primarily been exploratory. In addition to exploring the platform in various directions, I sought to understand the actual use of the data presented by the platform. The level of complexity in interpreting the information was extremely high, leading users to exit the platform and contact the company directly to obtain the necessary data.
The platform seemed to require a deep understanding of data extraction processes, which is why it was primarily used by internal employees.
A central feature is the dynamic filter, inspired by Apple's dynamic island concept. This allows users to choose the time period they want to analyze. By default, it's set to "Today" for a quick overview, but users can customize it to explore data trends, patterns, and performance over different timeframes. The dynamic filter lets users easily zoom in and out of time intervals, promoting flexibility and enhancing the user experience within the dashboard.
In addition to the platform views, a proposal for the creation of a corporate suite in the style of Google Suite was also requested to gradually adapt all company software under a single Design System. For this project, however, I wanted to keep only a preview on the login and Home screens where you can choose your service.
The dynamic filter empowers users to effortlessly zoom in or out of specific time intervals, facilitating efficient exploration and analysis of data within the dashboard. This feature promotes flexibility, adaptability, and a user-centric approach, elevating the user experience and maximizing the effectiveness of the dashboard in meeting diverse analytical requirements.

As a company that makes many services and products available to its users, my idea was to think of a short, easy-to-remember name that could be linked to the company in some way, while maintaining the meaning of a data collection and analysis platform. The proposal was immediately accepted with enthusiasm.
